John Cage’s engaging How to Get Started (1989) is all about ideas! Cage performed it only once – at the Bay Area Radio Drama Conference at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, California – explaining to his audience what he was going to do just moments before he began. This was a collaborative improvisation with two sound engineers: an extemporization on 10 discrete ideas, with each new topic presented against an ever more dense audio playback of the extemporizations that had come before. The plot literally thickens! Cage’s experiment in improvisatory thinking in public revealed concerns about art and artists, performance, intentions, dreams, and chance. What would you talk about? Come hear Peter Price along with other guest performers deliver their own unique presentations, and maybe you’ll garner a spot to perform as well!
