Current Artist in Residence: Grant Bouvier

About Grant

Grant Bouvier is an electronic artist and composer based in Philadelphia who's sound and video works focus on dead media formats, weird circuits, and uncertainty. Through the use of obsolete and obscure electronic instruments and interfaces he seeks to puncture the computational artifice of the postdigital world to reveal the bizarre and eerie states that exist beneath its glossy surface.

Residency Statement

‘Sleep Architectures’ is the working title for a live audio visual performance piece that Grant Bouvier will be developing while in residence at Fidget. This work is intended to present a marriage of analog video synthesis, found footage, and improvised electronic music in its purest form. Speaking of the thematic content of the work, Bouvier says:

“The surveillance state, in concert with the techno-capitalist agenda of the ruling class, has left the majority of us in a state of permanent liminality. An agonizing stasis where everything seems possible but nothing is real. A sociopolitical hall of mirrors in which we have been left in a dream state. We are unable to envision a viable alternative to our collective exploitations, so we are force fed nostalgia for times many of us have no true memory of, oftentimes nostalgic in its own origin. This escherian pop cultural logic of late capitalism leaves us lost even deeper in the dream state labyrinth, while our data is tracked and commodified with or without our consent to better tune the instruments of our liminality. In order to escape this dream state, to break this feedback loop, we must pierce the postdigital veil through the reclamation of analog tools of a forgotten past. Our current moment in time is but one possible moment, and if we can envision an alternate present, then perhaps we can remake the future as well. ‘Sleep Architectures’ is an attempt to realize a lost future”
